When we decided to live abroad we had many things to consider. The biggest one was this, the right decision for us as a couple. How do you know if it’s the right thing for you?
We first had to decide what we really wanted to do, as this is not an easy thing to do. Packing up your life and moving. We had to decide if the lifestyle is what we wanted. Living away from family, and the comforts of what you are used to. This would mean selling homes, vehicles and all of your belongings.
This is a hard one for me as I struggle with the things that I own and I have many feelings attached to my things. Things that have been handed down and passed down through generations. I also have purchased things that I love along the way. Knowing that this would be the hardest part for me to do.
The one thing that I have decided to make easier for me is since I have been a certified yoga teacher I have learned that all of that is just stuff and that having that stuff can weigh you down, emotionally and physically. We have also decided that we want to live a more minimalist lifestyle. We will keep what is truly important to us and then rest can be passed down to others in the family. Deciding to live on a lot less this process will be easier for me.
My husband and I also have no real ties to hold us back.. I have no children of my own and my husband has two grown children. Which makes this decision easier.
We have family, and we are all close, but our whole family loves to travel so it will be a great vacation for them to be able to come for a vacation. We will also be able to travel back home as well.
A lot of people would love to be able to live abroad but family ties hold them back, children and grandchildren. They also have careers that don’t allow them to work abroad.
My husband and I both work from our laptops, we can work from anywhere that we can get a WIFI connection. Since we had already been living away from home for six months this was already happening for us.
Finding out that because of the cost of taxis and busses as the main transportation in Ecuador, we do not require having a vehicle. The main way of getting around is by bicycles and walking, and if you need to go further you can hire someone or take a bus.
This also allows us to not have to pay for vehicles, insurance and gas or payments on a vehicle. This frees up a lot of finances to enjoy the beach lifestyle and what it has to offer.
Living a healthier lifestyle. As mentioned just now that we would be walking or riding bicycles, eating healthier as well. The fruits and vegetables are grown right there in the country. We always ate healthy but we began to eat better and smarter and began walking more to get used to the new lifestyle. This appealed to us as this will give us a healthier and more active quality of life.
My husband loves to snorkel and scuba dive and being near the ocean he will be able to do this more often. I love being by the ocean and walking on the beach. This will allow me to feel better and the ocean always makes my elements a lot better. The dampness and cooler weather causes me to have a lot of pain in my back. I will also be able to do yoga outdoors and hopefully be able to do yoga retreats once we get settled and get to know the areas around our town.
With doing a pro and con list about living abroad we found that we were at a point in our lives that we would be better to do it now rather than later down the road. I would rather do it now than look back ten years from now and say “we should have moved there years ago”
When we decided that this was what we really wanted to do we did not waste any time. We put the stages in motion and we did it. I want to be very clear this is not for everyone. You have to have everything in order and you also need to have support from family and friends or this can be extremely hard to do if you have people telling you that you should not be doing this. We have been very lucky and have had support from everyone.
So my question to you is this?
Could you pack up your life and move abroad and start over? Could you be happier somewhere else.
Some people say that we are brave and that they would love to be able to do it, but they can’t. Maybe we are paving the way for others who are sitting on the fence about doing something like this.
Leave a comment below and let me know if this is something that you would love to do but can’t.
