So you have made the decision to move abroad. Now What?
The first thing that went through my mind was OMG NOW What. That is when fear struck. All the questions ran through my mind. Where To? How? and When? As well The language barrier.
Where To? We had been looking into other countries, like Costa Rica, Mexico and The Virgin Islands. Then we fell upon Olon Ecuador.
How? Well we knew we had to Fly once we made our decision to move to Ecuador.
When? Well we needed to sell property and vehicles to be able to do this. As well how soon would all of this happen.
Telling our family that we are packing up and moving away. It was a shock to some but to others they knew that our dream was to be near a beach full time as we had already been living six months abroad in Florida for the past two years. It was the fear that some may try to talk us out of our decision or tell us that it was a bad idea. My fear was met with the complete opposite. Family and friends are happy and excited for us. This was a relief for me.
The big one for me was how to prepare the dog to enter Ecuador. This was my biggest fear as it’s not an easy task and there are many steps to be taken to get the dog into the country. If things are not done just right then you will need to reschedule your plans. This happened to us. We figured she was up to date on all her shots, and when it came time to certified her she was missing a vaccine that was not mandatory for her to be in Canada or the USA. This can be devastating and frustrating. This was my worst fear.
The other fear I had was just getting from the airport to the home, we had rented. Trusting someone who we have never met to pick us up as the drive is two hours away. Thank goodness we belong to Facebook groups and we were able to find a nice gentleman to pick us up. Others who gave great recommendations. We felt confident in our choice.
The other fear was the language barrier. Spanish is the language that is spoken in Ecuador but where we are going to be staying a majority also speak English. I do know some Spanish from my previous travels to the Caribbean and we have been learning Spanish online to get by. Once we get there as well we have been in touch with someone who will be able to teach us how to coexist in a Spanish speaking community. Google translate will also be our go to to help us get by.
The other fear was finding a place. This was also met by a fluke place that we were able to find and secure a place that was safe and to our liking and in the right part of town.
Fear can either be a good thing or can eat you up. We chose to turn the fear into an adventure and a way to share with others the journey of moving abroad. I look forward to the new adventure that awaits us.
