I’m a person who loves to travel and I love to be able to still travel even though I have a very small Yorkie Chihuahua Mix (Chorkie). When I looked into getting a dog 5 years ago I wanted to get a small lap dog that I would be able to travel with and one that allows me to be more free in doing so.
Ava has been travelling with me via airplanes since she was a few months old. Her very first trip was to see my dad and step mom in Newfoundland, Canada. We travelled from Toronto to Gander. Ava was an amazing traveler back then. Ava had to be in a carrier the whole time, being so small and young she slept the whole way.
As she got older she found it not as fun to travel via airplanes. Ava needs to have some medication that her vet gives her. Ava has been to Florida more than a few times via airplane. Ava does not mind driving long distances in a vehicle as well. She has been to Myrtle Beach from Toronto. We took a trip one time from Toronto to Florida and then onto Myrtle Beach. We have travelled back and forth from Toronto to Florida as we own a home in the sunny south.
Travelling back and forth from Canada to The United States via airplanes is easy. All she needs is proof that she is up to date with all her shots.
Avas next big trip and her longest on a plane will be to Ecuador. This process is not as simple or easy. Ava not only needs to have all her shots, she needs to be seen so many days prior to arrival in the the country and she need to have internal and external medicine to be able to enter. Papers also need to be submitted to the https://www.usda.gov/ they must approve and certify that she has been checked out by a certified Vet.
So many days prior to arriving into Ecuador we have to notify them that we are coming via email.
Once she arrives in Ecuador she then has to go be checked out again by another vet in the airport.
I appreciate all the precautions that they take to import your animals. It is just so worrisome. I know for a fact that she is healthy and ready and that she is up to date on all shots, as I believe that if you own a dog or cat that's just what you do. You make she they are healthy and they have all shots.
Ava travels in a dog stroller so that she has more room to move around and then she is placed in her Airline Regulated Carrier for under the seat. Ava actually loves the stroller it makes her feel safe, I think. We also let her out in the airport to walk around as well away from other people, but most of the time she is looking to get back into her stroller.
Why the stroller you ask? Well it makes it easier to move around and it allows us to bring her carrier as well on the back with her dog treats and water and some food.
I hop you enjoyed the article, I will do another post once we have done the trip to let everyone know, what really happens abroad in the airport as each airport requirement's are different.
